Further training

Taking further driver training is a great idea - it's probably one of the best things you can do to reduce your chances of having a crash in the first few years after passing your test. Here are two of the best options.

Pass Plus
Pass Plus is a training course specifically aimed at new drivers, designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry.

Pass Plus will build upon your existing skills and knowledge. It will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards and can help you to become more confident on the roads.

Pass Plus is made up of six practical modules which include:

  • Driving in town
  • Driving in all weathers
  • Driving on rural roads
  • Driving at night
  • Driving on dual carriageways
  • Driving on motorways

Anyone who holds a full UK licence is eligible to take part. You will not have to take a test at the end of the course but you will be continually assessed.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM)
The IAM supports the raising of driving and riding standards and campaigns for increased skills.

The IAM's advanced driving or riding programme helps you learn and apply the essential ingredients of advanced motoring.

Skill for Life is the respected and certified course from the IAM. Advanced driving means skill, confidence and enjoyment all go together.

On passing your Advanced Test you will be eligible for full IAM membership and able to access the continued support and information to help develop your skills and stay on top of your game.

RoSPA Young Driver Assessment
RoSPA's Young Driver Assessment (YDA) is aimed at those aged 17- 24, from six months after gaining a full driving license. It's not a formal test, just an honest, objective and completely confidential assessment of your driving.

The YDA is purely a review of driving to ensure that you have developed skills beyond the point of passing the practical driving test. It is also the perfect opportunity to discuss any aspects of driving that you are unsure of.
